"I wanted to take a different direction in my art and to develop painterly skills. I also wanted to break my habitual use of standard applications of the “usual” landscape colors. Alain’s Painterly Landscape Course has helped me achieve these goals. Through his teaching and the guidance of mentors I also learned about thumbnail, tonal and color sketches, underpainting, color schemes, the color wheel, and the different effects of various pastel papers.
I now feel much more confident in using brighter colors in different ways that I would never have considered before."

Julie
"Before I took this course I never felt my paintings had a final touch that gave them a focal point and a little oomph!
Now I understand much better what components make a painting a finished piece of art and I’m much happier with my work!
There were many AHA moments along the way, but most of all I loved the personal touch – that meant SO much to me: I felt “seen”. The course was friendly and supportive and can be archived to use at any time. And it was affordable, which is also important!"
"This course was amazing!
I learned how to organize my pastels to make it easier to find the colors I need. I found out how important a thumbnail sketch is in helping determine how to proceed. I discovered how helpful color studies are when picking a color scheme.

"Oh my goodness!
This course exceeded my expectations in ways I could not have imagined and I have learnt so many things
– such as how the color wheel works and how to put it to use, the use of thumbnails and the importance of tonal values, the different kinds of hard and soft pastels, and how to see the bigger picture and not get stuck in trying to paint details. My big win is that Alain has given me the confidence to learn and move forward and for that I will always be grateful."

Dana
"My specific goals in taking this course were to learn painterly mark making, understand value, and find out how to successfully proceed from the beginning to the end of a painting.
My big wins were getting better at seeing value by using thumbnails and using lighter mark making at the beginning of a painting.
Alain’s Painterly Landscape Course is a treasure trove of painting knowledge!"

"The course has given me greater confidence in my art and myself. I never referred to myself as an artist. I will now, which is a win!
I also have a greater understanding of shapes and the use of the color wheel. The Roadmap and the Visual Dashboard are the tools needed to get to the finished painting. I love the fact I have it all clearly written out.
I am so grateful for Alain's teaching and his style of encouragement. Â This has been an amazing experience!
This course will change your art life. It's the best course that covers all your questions in an understanding manner." -Â Joan
"This course helped me reach all of my goals:
not to copy reference photos, be creative with color, using underpaintings and not covering the whole thing up, saying more with less, making mindful marks, not overworking the painting, and finding my own style!
I now have the tools to make more creative color choices.
The approach to thumbnails has freed me from copying reference photos, and that is my biggest AHA takeaway.
This course is really fantastic. Each milestone was clearly spelled out and sequenced in a logical way. The Facebook community is like being in a class, with the feedback and encouragement needed to grow." - Leslie

Sarah
"I wanted to learn to break down projects into repeatable steps, and I wanted to loosen up my strokes. The course taught me the “why” behind some of the steps I was not doing before, such as thumbnails and small color studies.Â
I am now much happier when I am working on larger pieces of art.
I thoroughly enjoyed the course."

I would totally do it again!"

I’m no longer just drawing lines or filling in spaces. I now feel a great sense of accomplishment."

"I finally understand the role of underpainting and the way it can be used to affect the mood of the painting.
I have much better confidence and understanding in changing the composition and choosing a color scheme for the painting. I also feel that developing my own unique style is not a dream anymore.

Eileen
"The course is great. A big win for me was realizing how to use thumbnails successfully, and how they impact the final work. I absolutely loved learning about the various underpainting methods.
I have also become more aware of the marks and edges when I am painting in oils and acrylic. A big win all around!
The Painterly Landscape Course is a real eye opener. It is great for learning with pastels, but equally informative for painters in wet media. A lot to learn and absorb, but totally worth it."

"For me, the Painterly Roadmap is a very clear and straight forward series of steps to take me from start to finish in a painting...with an incredibly exciting amount of choices along the way!! Every milestone in the roadmap encourages me to think, consider and experiment...and to follow a very consistent and steady method of work.
By doing this, I feel confident...and so free to "fly my kite"!"

Kitty
"I have been recognized for my artwork, but it was such a struggle and all intuitive.
Now, I am far more confident, more knowledgeable and find real joy in the work.
Alain is amazing as an artist and a teacher. You'll never be sorry for taking his courses. They are motivating and are priceless."

Nancy
"I learned a ton about color. As a total newbie, I also got up the general pastel learning curve very quickly. I historically have had a tighter style.
This course helped me loosen up and understand about optical blending.
There were lots of AHA moments since I was previously unfamiliar with the medium. I started my art journey back in pre-internet days, so to learn anything, I had to buy a book or go to a weekend workshop. I would pay a lot of money for the workshops (not to mention travel and lodging) and inevitably come home feeling frustrated and depressed. This course was so well organized ... It put all the concepts together in an orderly fashion. It is a huge bargain!"

Molly
"I have many reference photos of landscapes, but wasn't sure where to start. This course has shown me how to make a game plan to paint them.
Exploration of the wet on wet underpaintings has helped me to loosen up. It's improvisational, it's exciting and it's teaching me to enjoy the spontaneity and creativity of painting. Alain Picard is the BEST! He's a great communicator, motivational instructor and his courses have lifetime accessibility."
"The thumbnail, colour study and underpainting exercises were a win in helping me with composition and palette choices, achieving my goal of using intuitive colour and mark making.
As I had not used pastels for a painting before, the painterly mark making and layering were a revelation!
Alain is an inspirational mentor who not only imparts a wealth of knowledge in pastel application, composition and palette, but his enthusiasm and desire to help you become a better pastel painter is infectious." - Maddie

Sylvie
"Shape simplification and clarifying values have been quite a revelation. I now understand why some of my pastels did not work. I still need to practice but it is much clearer to me what I need to do to correct many pastels I have done that were good but not great. Trying out colors in small scale have also allowed me to use sticks of colors I have never touched! When it comes to choosing my colors, I now understand much better the color wheel and how to create harmony and accents."

Chris
"The biggest win for me is that the course has motivated me to do more art!!! Throughout my life, it has always been done in spurts. I really like pastels and learned so much. I am fortunate enough to live on the water with beautiful views. While my first love is still portrait, no longer do I feel I have to shy away from landscapes. I have a much better understanding of under painting, application of pastel, the color wheel, interpretation of color in refreshing new ways, mark making, and the importance of color studies and thumbnails."Â

Joni
"I dipped my toe in the waters of developing a looser style, and now have a better idea of what that could be. I had wanted to do this for some time but had no idea how to go about it. I don’t have an art background beyond various local workshops, so learning not to just jump in there to create the painting was quite helpful for me. Starting with the basics helped pull it all together for me, so my foundation is stronger, and will lead to more confident explorations."
"Everything about this course was a win for me, from realizing the importance of starting from the firm foundation of identifying values and shapes, to doing thumbnails and colour studies before even contemplating diving in to produce a larger piece.
The way the course was structured helped build my confidence in what I am capable of producing and it did so in a way that was totally supportive and unthreatening.
This class is excellent, and well-structured - leading you through step by step, building a firm foundation before tackling the bigger picture.Â
My painting has come so far in such a short time, something my friends would clearly be able to see.
You will not regret taking this course." - Trina

"From being something that was occasionally fitted in after everything else was done, painting is now the first thing that I do after breakfast!
Completing a painting brings me feelings of fulfillment like nothing else. Â
Now I feel that I have 'a way in', that Alain has given me tools to guide me and help me to improve as an artist. The course is wonderful. It will change your life!" -Â Morag
"This course has taught me so much about the planning aspect of a good painting!
Using thumbnails and color studies was explained to me in the past but having the time during this course really helped me to learn how to do this at my own pace. Every lesson was challenging in some way, but also rewarding to see my own growth.
This course is not only fun, but also provides a safe environment for learning. Alain is a fantastic coach and teacher, and the mentors are also very knowledgeable and helpful throughout the course. You will learn a repeatable process that will improve your entire approach to a painting. I would highly recommend this course! - Gay
